List of things that I think the Application should contain,
1. One Sided Blocks
- Preferably the blocks will have a letter only on the top part so that the Fiducials will be stuck on the bottom end and the user won’t have reason to flip the block sideways not having the fiducial facing the webcam.
2. Volume controller
- for the background music – This needs to be placed strategically and stuck to a rotating object that in turn is solidly inserted into our structure.
3. Interactive Userguide
- We need to have an interactive user guide that can perform a tutorial in the beginning on how to play the game and also what animals the child needs to identify and subsequently how to help the user according to his question. Contd in point 8. The animals to identify help can be called in at any time, the application will not read the ones that have been successfully matched.
4. Question or Help call
– This can be done by placing a fiducial onto an image of a question mark or a child with that booq!! face.
5. Completion of Word trigger
– This needs to be in the form of a correct sign indicating that the child has finished the word.
6. Voice synthisizer
- will have to be able to deny certain pronunciations. There should also be a feature that doesn’t allow the child to write certain words on the display. if example the child writes ZOBB we will make the reactivision stop and perform some type of error sound. Or call "Mummy someones' trying to write naughty words" out loud.
7. Final Animation
- There should be an animation with all the animals involved ones the child manages to write down all the words.
8. Sidebar
- There should be a sidebar containing a variety of help topics. These in turn can trigger an animated tutorial of how to perform that particular task from the same interactive guide in point 3.
9. Sidebar 2
– Containing all the animals that have been matched. Crossed by a strike through or anything that shows the word has been identified.
10. Completion
– On completion we need to put some sort of party theme that varies randomly to show that the level has been completed.
11. Application levels
- We can start looking into having the application perform two different levels. Level one meet the simpler words (say 3 characters per word and level two 4 + characters per word)
Comment on this post so that we'll have the thoughts all in one place.

Guys please find our table base template here It is a scanned freehand drawing. What do you think?

We can also add something like comparing the wrong word joined to some animal in the library as well. An simple example, if the child joins the word DUG, some animation plays showing that its wrong, and the the word dog with a picture of a dog is displayed to show an alternative word that matches (help factor if the child is 'sure' he/she wrote the correct word. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteApart from that i agree with your points Lorn. If something else comes to my mind i will insert it :)
Yes mate, sounds great, maybe performance will be somewhat of a hiccup (on the other hand most of the combined animation voice tasks will be :-)), but certainly a very good idea.
ReplyDeleteStevo, Mark Any ideas??
Hi Lorn. Steve and I just read this from work. Nice post, i fully agree with you.
ReplyDeleteCan we consider the thing about the second webcam? Like the one we saw in class? I really liked that!
Karl already checked it out and with our current capabilities we cannot find a way how to integrate the two webcams together.
ReplyDeleteWe decided that it was going to incur too much extra effort, especially considering that if you place fiducials strategically you can get the same results anyways.
Guys do you think we can meet Saturday 27th March at around 14:00 till approximately 18:00pm.
ReplyDeleteIn this meeting we will go through the sketch attached in this post, analyze the program features on Karl's laptop, Start planning tasks per person and plan time frames.
Steve is your garage still available?
In the mean I suggest that we all give another go through of the papers that Karl uploaded, we need them to guide us through the project.
On the 27th i cannot do it my self. Can we meet on the 31st March, which is a wednesday and its a holiday?
ReplyDeleteWOW Lorn, love the reactivision table concept, we should definitely include this for the presentation/documentation.
ReplyDeleteWould it be ok if i attempted to make a digital image out of it on the pc?
Steve,
ReplyDeleteSure thing mate, just remember that it could also be placed on a slide as a free hand drawing and create that sort of interaction with the real world, what d'ya think?
Sorry for replying late, but I've been super full and Vanessa's last task took a hefty chunk of my course allocated time.
I mean for cryin' out loud, 1 mark to get to know a camera, setup shutter speeds and what not, document findings, compile a report. What da' @!"# I had to borrow my Bro's camera because mine isn't exactly technologically advanced. And not even my bro's, but at least I could set ISO settings for shutter speeds.
ReplyDeleteWould have been a great task if only there was at least 10 more marks; I'd have given it the proper weight too.
Well, apologies for posting irrelevant chat on this blog, but I had to document my frustration somewhere.
Guys,
ReplyDeleteCheck out this super cool table - http://nuigroup.com/forums/viewthread/5381/
Maybe ours could be similar???
What do you think?
Guys,
ReplyDeleteI have a problem with the table. I had to re-design it all over. We will definitely have to use a mirror otherwise the distance that the camera will have to sit will get the height way over the normal. I calculated that in order to place the webcam at 65-70cm distance we will have a table with over 85cm of height.
I will attach a sketched image later in the week but basically the new dimensions are 70 - 75cm table height, 75cm width and 65cm depth. The glass will be the whole width except for the borders. The block container will be attached to the side of the table as a seperate object and the whole thing will be partially closed - depending on our tests, so that we can allow a few cm clearance for leg room. There will also be a space for the laptop on the back part of the table top shrinking down the fiducial base to a 40cm x 70cm.
I calculated through the height/distance equation, by performing the height of image/height of object = distance of image from lence/distance of object and concluded that with a 45cm mirror and the webcam attached to the upper part of the table, the image reflected will be wide enough to place 9 fiducials including the OK, and the seperate volume knob.
If we opt to keep only the smaller words, than we shift the mirror further up and minimize the table height even more (Considering that our users will have 3 - 5 years of age).
We will discuss during the lesson.
Ciao for now and Heppy Easter .... Hopefully :-)
Lorn.
